The Las Vegas LED Spherical Screen Job That Broke My Cheap-Quote Habit

It was 2:40 a.m. in a Las Vegas ballroom, and I was staring at an LED spherical screen that had decided to display the client's logo as a smeared gradient. The event started in six hours. My gut said something else. The upside was saving $750. The risk was bad color mixing on the most visible object in the room. I kept asking myself: is $750 worth showing a washed-out logo to 400 people? The worst case was a redo at maybe $3,500. The best case was a clean event and a client who never thinks about the screen. The full cost includes shipping, setup, support, the risk of a bad calibration, the cost of an emergency fix at 1 a.m., and the value of your own sleep. If you don't count those, you're not comparing quotes. You're just guessing.

What I mean is that the cheapest quote is only the first line in a longer story. The cheap controller, the missing calibration, and the late-night technician all become part of the final invoice.

The question isn't "Which controller should I use?" The question is "What's the total cost if the cheap option fails?"

I still spec Novastar controllers on most jobs. The difference is that I now calculate total cost of ownership before comparing vendor quotes, and the cheapest quote gets the same checklist as the most expensive one.

Our pre-event checklist now includes: request the calibration report, name the exact controller model, confirm the mapping software supports the LED spherical screen layout, get a support plan, and write down the after-hours phone number.
