Own a Novastar LED Wall or Hire One in London? A Cost Controller’s Breakdown for Sports Signage

Look, I’m not a display engineer. I’m the person who signs the purchase orders—and, after six years of AV procurement in London, I’m also the one who gets the late-night call when a screen doesn’t match a sponsor’s brand colour.

My company delivers sports digital signage across the UK. We are not a manufacturer and we don’t get a commission from Novastar, but nearly every permanent screen we install uses a Novastar controller. In the past year, the question I hear most from venues has shifted from “What pixel pitch should we use?” to “Should we own the LED wall or hire it?”

This is an owner-versus-hire comparison from someone who has approved roughly £400,000 of LED display projects since 2019. What I compare: cost per usable hour, colour fidelity and flexibility

I compare two realistic options: Option A is a London LED video wall hire package for each event; Option B is owning a permanent Novastar-controlled LED wall. Each has its place. I’m not going to tell you one is universally better, because it isn’t. What I can tell you is how the numbers behave after you add maintenance, calibration, support and the cost of your own time.

Dimension 1: Sticker price vs cost per usable hour—and the Adafruit trap

The cheapest-looking purchase order I ever saw for a supposed sports display was not a professional LED panel. It was a collection of hobby-grade RGB matrices ordered after someone searched for “LED display Adafruit.” On paper, the cost per pixel was attractive. In reality, it was a development platform, not a display system you sell to a client.

Adafruit makes good parts for learning and prototyping. A 64x64 RGB matrix can cost as little as £30–£60, and with a microcontroller you can build something fun. But for sports digital signage you need scaling, high refresh rate, signal synchronisation, scheduled content, remote control, spare modules and support. A professional Novastar controller such as the VX4S-N or MCTRL4K is not a small line item; expect to see £1,500–£3,000 for the processor alone. That’s before you add a NovaCLB dongle. Yet the controller is why the wall can show identical frames across multiple cabinets and stay reliable during a live match.

In 2023, I priced a sports-lounge display two ways. The DIY route looked about 18% cheaper before we added engineering time and mounting. After a realistic schedule of three on-site setup days, the “saving” nearly disappeared. The commercial solution was still more expensive, but it arrived as a complete product—not a research project. Not a fair fight, but procurement isn’t fair. It’s arithmetic.

Dimension 2: Novastar LED panel color calibration methods and the NovaCLB dongle price

The second dimension is colour. This is where the smallest line item can blow up a project budget.

People assume that if you buy good quality LED panels, they will look uniform. The reality is that individual red, green and blue LEDs vary in brightness and wavelength. This is normal, and it is why Novastar’s LED panel color calibration methods exist. The workflow typically uses NovaCLB software, a camera, test patterns and a small hardware key—the NovaCLB dongle. The camera measures each pixel, the software calculates correction data, and the data is stored in the receiving cards. When a module is replaced later, you can recalibrate so the new module matches the rest of the wall.

I know the exact phrase most people type before they buy: “Novastar NovaCLB dongle price.” The quotes I’ve seen from UK distributors in late 2024 were between £350 and £500, excluding VAT. On a £50,000 wall, that is noise. On a small job, it looks like an overpriced USB stick. I understand why customers argue about it. But if you’re running sports digital signage, brand colours are not optional.

Industry standard color tolerance is Delta E < 2 for brand-critical colors. Delta E of 2–4 is noticeable to trained observers; above 4 is visible to most people. Reference: Pantone Color Matching System guidelines.

At a venue with sponsor boards, team colours, and broadcast cameras, a Delta E of 4 or 5 looks muddy and unprofessional. Never expected the NovaCLB dongle to be the difference between a signed contract and a stop-work order. It was. A brand manager rejected a screen because the corporate orange did not match the printed campaign. We recalibrated, the colour hit the target, and the project moved forward. The dongle paid for itself in one afternoon.

I should also say: some traditional suppliers still claim you don’t need calibration if the LEDs are binned well. That assumption is becoming outdated in 2025. What was enough in 2020—matching cabinets by eye—doesn’t satisfy modern brand requirements. The fundamentals haven’t changed; trust well-binned panels but verify with a camera.

Dimension 3: London LED video wall hire vs owning a Novastar system

Now the bigger decision: hire or own?

London has a mature LED video wall hire market. A common quote for an indoor 3.9mm wall package—delivery, setup, operation, and removal—runs from £1,500 to £3,000 per day, depending on area, crew, and processing. Most serious hire companies now send Novastar processors as standard. So you aren’t really choosing between “Novastar” and “London hire.” You’re choosing whether to buy the Novastar chain as a capital asset or pay for it inside a service fee.

On the buy side, a permanent 25m² 3.9mm indoor wall with a decent commercial LED panel, a Novastar processor, installation and a small spares kit might come to £35,000–£65,000. Add the NovaCLB dongle price and calibration time. A 25m² wall used for one match per week is one thing. A venue with 12 big sports nights each year is another.

In our 2024 cost model, the break-even point between hiring and owning was around 23 rental days per year. If you use a screen fewer than 15 days per year, hiring is almost always cheaper and far less stressful. If you use it more than 30 days per year, ownership wins—especially for permanent sports digital signage that runs daily, such as digital scoreboards, perimeter boards or sports-betting displays. Those applications need to be available at predictable moments, and the cost per use is low enough to justify maintenance contracts and spares.

One more thing: hire prices include a technician who knows the wall. When you own, that knowledge either sits inside your team or disappears when the integrator leaves. In our ownership budget, we set aside hours for training and for a support agreement. That’s often the number people forget.

Honest confession: I have made the ownership mistake. In 2021, I approved a permanent wall for a venue that only had 14 event days that season. The wall looked great. The depreciation didn’t. If the venue stays at that level, we would have been better off hiring for two years and avoiding obsolescence.

So buy or hire? The answer in three scenarios

After six years and about 40 major LED projects, my advice depends on usage, not opinion.

  • Fewer than 15 rental days per year: hire from an established London LED wall supplier. Specify a Novastar controller and ask what calibration they perform before every event.
  • Between 15 and 30 rental days per year: build a three-year TCO model before buying. Take into account operator training, storage, spares and firmware updates. In this zone, a good hire contract may still be the smarter option.
  • More than 30 rental days—or 24/7 sports digital signage: buy a professionally installed wall with Novastar control, calibrate it, keep spares and run it as an asset.

And if you’re still tempted by the DIY route because you saw “LED display Adafruit” in a search: use it for R&D. A paying sports client is not the place for a prototype.

The industry is evolving. What was best practice in 2020 may not hold in 2025. But procurement is always the same underneath: compare total cost per successful event, not the price per panel.
