Novastar LED Control System Setup: A 6-Step Checklist (Including Camera Calibration)

I'm the office administrator for a 12-person AV integration company. I handle purchasing — roughly $300K a year across a bunch of vendors — and coordinate installs. Sometimes I get handed a soldering iron I shouldn't touch. I'm not an engineer. But after setting up 30 or so LED displays with Novastar since 2022, I know exactly what goes wrong when people buy LED screens without thinking about the control system.

This checklist is for you if you're buying or installing a Novastar LED control system — for an active LED display (a screen that runs content most of the time), an LED ads display, or a digital signage project. It's a practical, do-this-then-that list. No deep theory.

Who this checklist is for

Use this when:

  • You're an integrator setting up your first Novastar-controlled LED wall.
  • You're a project manager who needs to make sure the install team didn't skip calibration.
  • You're a Navori digital signage integrator connecting Navori players to an LED wall.
  • You have panels from two different batches and you're worried they won't match.

There are six steps. The one most people skip is camera calibration. Don't skip it.

The short version

  1. Verify panel compatibility with your Novastar receiving cards.
  2. Pick the right Novastar processor for the job.
  3. Map the signal chain from media player to LED panels.
  4. Configure the Novastar control system software.
  5. Run Novastar LED panel color calibration using a camera.
  6. Test with real content at the actual viewing distance.

Step 1: Verify panel compatibility before you buy

Not every LED panel works with every Novastar receiving card. Novastar publishes compatibility lists for its receiving cards and processors. Before you order panels, check the driver IC and scan type against those lists.

I learned this the hard way. I assumed a “HUB75-compatible” panel would work with our existing Novastar receiver cards. Didn't verify. Turned out the card firmware didn't know the panel's scan configuration. We had to wait for a firmware update and swap out two receiving cards.

If you're a Navori digital signage integrator, this matters even more. The whole chain — Navori player, Novastar processor, sending card, receiving card, LED module — has to work together. You don't want to find out on site that the panel isn't supported.

Step 2: Pick the right Novastar controller

Novastar has processors for a range of jobs. For a fixed install like an LED ads display in a storefront, something like the VX4S-N is usually enough. For more complex setups — multi-screen walls, unusual panel layouts, or rental work — you might need a VX1000 or MX40 Pro. As of January 2025, the Novastar lineup covers both ends.

Don't overbuy. But don't underbuy either. A processor with too few inputs creates headaches later. A processor with features you'll never use is just wasted money.

Ask yourself these questions before ordering:

  • How many HDMI and DisplayPort inputs do you actually need?
  • What output resolution does the LED wall require?
  • Do you need HDR support?
  • Do you need backup or redundancy?
  • Will the screen size grow in a year or two? (Ours did.)

If you're not sure, call Novastar's support or your distributor. In my experience, they're pretty responsive — even when we were only ordering for a single-screen project.

Step 3: Map your signal chain

The typical signal chain for a digital signage LED wall looks like this:

Media player (like Navori) → Novastar processor → sending card (built-in or separate) → receiving cards → LED modules

In a lot of RFQs I've seen, buyers focus on brightness specs and pixel pitch, then completely miss the control system in the middle. The question everyone asks is “How many nits?” The question they should ask is “How does the control system map the source to the panels?”

There's a simple rule: the output resolution from the Novastar processor should match the LED wall's native resolution. If it doesn't, you're scaling. Scaling means blurry text and edge artifacts. On an active LED display, that's the first thing a client notices.

Also think about cable runs. Novastar processors typically output over Ethernet to receiving cards. Long cable runs and cheap Ethernet cables cause signal problems. We learned to test the entire signal path before the panel mounting crew finishes. It's easier to troubleshoot on the ground than on a lift.

Step 4: Configure the control system

Once the hardware is connected, you'll need to configure the Novastar system. This usually means running the software that ships with your processor — NovaLCT or the model-specific tool — and setting up:

  • Receiving card mapping
  • Panel scan type and data groups
  • Module size and pixel pitch
  • Input source selection
  • Scaling and frame rate

This is the part where people rush. I get it. It's tedious. But a wrong data group gives you a screen that looks like scrambled TV static. And a wrong frame rate gives you flickering that shows up in every video.

If you're a Navori digital signage integrator, make sure the processor is set to accept the player's native output — usually 1080p or 4K. Letting the processor do the scaling is usually cleaner than asking the Navori player to output a non-standard resolution.

Save the configuration when you're done. We keep a project folder for every install with the config file, calibration coefficients, and firmware versions. Future you — or the next technician — will be grateful.

Step 5: Run Novastar LED panel color calibration using camera

Here's the step that gets skipped: Novastar LED panel color calibration using camera. It sounds more complicated than it is. You basically set up a camera in front of the screen, run a few test patterns, and the Novastar calibration software measures the actual light output from every module. Then it generates correction coefficients that make brightness and color uniform across the whole wall.

Why does this matter? Because LED panels from different production batches don't match. You can have two panels with the exact same spec sheet, and one looks slightly warmer than the other. On an LED ads display, that's a disaster. From ten feet away, the logo looks like it's made of rectangles.

I'm not a calibration engineer, so I can't speak to the color science behind it. What I can tell you from a buyer's perspective is this: in 2024, we had a project with panels from three different batches. We ran the camera calibration, and after applying the coefficients, the wall looked uniform. Clients don't ask about calibration, but they definitely ask why one part of the screen looks different.

I don't have hard data on how many installs have this problem. But based on our own projects through 2024, I'd guess a quarter of them had some level of mismatch before calibration. That's too many to ignore.

Before the calibration day, check the software's supported camera list. Not every camera works with Novastar calibration software. Buy or borrow one that's on the list, and bring a tripod. You don't want to hold a camera steady by hand for five minutes. (We tried. It didn't work.)

Plan for 20 to 40 minutes of calibration time per install. Less if you set the camera up correctly. More if the wall is large.

Don't skip this because the project is “just one screen.” Small orders deserve the same quality as big ones. The supplier who treats a one-screen order like a nuisance is the supplier who loses the fifty-screen order later. I've seen that happen more than once.

Step 6: Test with real content

After calibration, don't just upload a PowerPoint and call it done. Run a white, black, red, green, and blue screen first. Those tests will show any remaining inconsistencies or dead pixels. Then run the content you actually plan to display.

For an active LED display, motion matters. Scrolling text, cross-dissolves, video — these can expose ghosting, latency, or flicker that static test patterns won't.

If you're a Navori digital signage integrator, test with the actual output resolution from your Navori player. And stand back from the screen. The pixel pitch that looks fine up close might look blocky from the sidewalk. That's a design problem, but you'll spot it during this test instead of during a client walkthrough.

For an LED ads display, run a loop that looks like real ads: a white background with a small logo, a dark scene with text, and a fast-moving video clip. If anything looks off, deal with it before the handover.

Common mistakes and final notes

  • Skipping firmware updates. Novastar updates firmware for a reason. Update receiving cards and processors before calibration, not after.
  • Using automatic camera exposure. Keep the camera in manual exposure mode during calibration. Auto-exposure makes dark panels look brighter than they are. (I didn't learn this from a manual — our first calibration looked perfect in the preview and wrong on the wall.)
  • Forgetting to save calibration files. Save them with the project name and date. Store them where a future technician can find them.
  • Assuming “same spec” means “same color.” It doesn't. Even same-model panels from different batches can differ. Calibration fixes that.

That's the list. It's not complicated, but it requires discipline. If you skip steps, you'll probably have a screen that works. If you follow all six, you'll have a screen that looks right.
