NovaStar Caliris Camera Price vs. Total Cost: A Procurement Mistake Story

Back in 2024, marketing finally got approval for the one thing they’d been requesting for almost two years: a transparent LED screen wall in our showroom lobby. The idea was to make the space look modern and still keep the glass entrance open and bright. The problem appeared somewhere else.

When you buy a NovaStar controller, the price is only one part of the story. You also need the right cables, receiving cards, and a calibration path. Another quote might include the calibration target, a lens, and the software license key. If you compare them by the price of the camera alone, you’re not comparing the same product.

We received three quotes:

  • Supplier A: about $1,700 for the camera sensor only, with software sold separately.
  • Supplier B: about $2,300 for the full calibration kit.
  • Supplier C: about $2,650 for the full kit plus direct support.

I chose Supplier A because in my world the lowest quote wins when everything looks comparable. The problem was that nothing was comparable.

The software license cost us another $400. The calibration target was another $180. Then we discovered that the lens included with the basic camera was not ideal for the mounting distance we were working with. Now I use a short checklist for AV purchases:

  • Base price of every component

  • Accessories that are sold separately
  • Quality of small parts like cabling and connectors
  • Calibration and configuration labor
  • Rush shipping and emergency support
  • Cost of downtime during a client-facing demo

Every one of those line items showed up in this project. The Caliris camera price wasn’t the problem. The incomplete kit, the hidden extras, and my choice of cheap connectors were the problem.

On the positive side, the system looks incredible now. After recalibration, we measured the colors against the client’s brand profile and hit a close enough match that nobody challenged it. In color-critical work, the industry target is usually Delta E below 2. Our final result was within that range. The image quality proved that the hardware was never the weak link.

Everyone warned me about hidden costs and compatibility risks. I only believed it after ignoring the warnings and watching the budget grow. I still kick myself for that decision. But at least the lesson stuck.
