LED Video Wall Design: Choosing Between Novastar TB50 and NovaCLB Cabinet Calibration

If your client's biggest requirement is “make it work and make it cheap,” the Novastar TB50 is your friend. This receiving card sits in Novastar's budget tier, but that's not a bad thing. It handles standard scan patterns and is compatible with most indoor and outdoor LED panels — within reason. You always check the driver chip compatibility first, which is a whole other topic.

What does a TB50 cost? As of Q1 2025, the street price typically runs between $25 and $40 per card, depending on volume and distributor. I avoid quoting a fixed number in this article because pricing moves with bulk deals, and quoting a stale list price is the most common mistake I see in project budgets. It's exactly what it sounds like — a hardware-software kit that measures your LED cabinets' colors and brightness, then writes correction coefficients so every cabinet matches its neighbor. One thing that surprises new integrators: Novastar's product names don't tell you everything about the product generation. The TB50 is a current-generation receiving card, but you need to confirm it matches your sending card's software version. NovaCLB also has its own compatibility matrix for camera models. Don't assume — read the release notes.

How to Know Which Scenario You're In

I could draw you a decision tree, but the field version is just three questions:

  1. What can't you tolerate going wrong? If cost overrun is the nightmare, go TB50. If color mismatch is the nightmare, go NovaCLB.
  2. How much time do you have? More than two weeks? You can evaluate any option. Less than 48 hours? Buy from whoever has stock today, period.
  3. Will this project be repeated? For rental inventory and permanent digital sign installations, NovaCLB's per-cabinet calibration data becomes an asset you use every time you reconfigure. A one-time conference room display probably doesn't need it.

If you're still stuck, remember this: a mid-range controller with a good calibration system is usually better than a high-end controller with no calibration plan. That's a hill I'll die on.

If you've been reading LED display news lately, you've seen the hype around “calibration as standard.” It's semi-true. More manufacturers are building calibration into their pipelines, and Novastar's NovaCLB is becoming a baseline tool in the rental segment. But the news rarely explains when it makes financial sense. It doesn't for a $10,000 budget install. It absolutely does for a $150,000 digital signage wall where a brand manager visits twice a year.

And news stories tend to act like price is one flat number. It isn't. The Novastar TB50 price varies by quantity, region, and your relationship with your distributor. If you're not asking for a good deal, you're overpaying. My rule: get three quotes, and ask your current vendor to match the lowest. If they don't, find someone who will. That's how we keep our average procurement cost down.

The best LED video wall design is the one that's on time, on budget, and looks right. Notice the order. Most people reverse it.

For 80% of my projects, the answer is a Novastar setup. For the other 20%, it's also a Novastar setup, plus a more careful conversation with the client about expectations.
